Jane Austen’s last piece of work, which she left unfinished at her death was Sanditon. It was begun on the 17th January 1817 and left unfinished on 18th March 1817. It was not published during her lifetime.

Jane Austen died four months later on the 18th July, 1817.

Austen family tradition has it that the work was to be originaly entitled, The Brothers, a reference to the Parker brothers, prominent characters in the fragment.
