Oh that's a shame! I'd much rather you had it!

Thank you, we are both well, but my now toddler is keeping me extremely busy - hoping to be able to post every now and then. I don't manage to comment very often but I do read all the posts on my mobile!

I have to say that I'm in two minds on this one: if the item was mentioned in JA's letters or her novels, then it would, I think be hard to argue that the ring could be exported. JA's topaze cross, for example,is such a special piece, given to her by Charles Austen and bought with some of his precious prize money. She mentions it in letters to her sister Cassandra, and of course it inspired the episode in Mansfield Park where William Price gives his sister, Fanny, a similar article. This is rightly , I would argue, a national treasure and ought to remain at the Jane Austen House Museum. But does this apply to this ring which, IIRC, was known only to the branch of the family who were selling it at Sotheby's, and is not mentioned by JA in any letters or works? Yes, it is a sweet thing, and it would be great if the Museum could display it ( and who knows, perhaps Ms Clarkson is someone who may be amenable to loaning it to them) but it does not have, to me at least, that special resonance to make it a " national treasure" To my mind, I'm glad that someone, in this case, Kelly Clarkson, who appears to like JA and her works, has purchased it.

No news as yet of any appeal to raise funds to buy it for the nation, but when I have details I will advise you all of the details.

And I have to say I've been surprised by the number of comments made in reply to this post, and which I could not allow to be published here. They contained IMHO, some very nasty sentiments regarding Ms Clarkson and her "qualifications" as a true Janeite. What would Jane Austen make of it all?

Hi Cathy Allen, I do agree with you in theory~Jane Austen's ring is a national treasure. But if the government wanted the ring to stay in the UK, the government should have purchased it. While I would love to see it stay there and be exhibited for all to see, it is the rightful property of Kelly Clarkson and should be hers to do with as she chooses.

I completely disagree with the previous commenters; Jane Austen's ring IS a British National Treasure, and it should stay there in England! Miss Clarkson should allow it to be exhibited (perhaps at Chawton? -- I have a friend who volunteers there, so that would be a good place ;-) ) and she could visit it if she wanted to, and wear it when she's there, but take it out of the UK? NEVER!

(Thank you; I'll get down off my soapbox now.) P.S. I would argue for it being a World Heritage Treasure!

Wow, that is most unexpected but very cool. I assumed the buyer would be a museum with an existing collection of Austen items. Do keep us posted if any further details come out!

That's very interesting. She does sing romantic songs, and it appears she is indeed quite the romantic at heart. I would think that she should be allowed to take it home with her, but should perhaps agree to have it displayed in the UK periodically. I think she has the resources to care for it properly.

As a fellow person residing in Texas & avid Austen-ite, I have a hope she might also allow it to be shown here. (I live not too far away from her) I would live in the UK if only I could, but that is far from my reach. It would be thrilling to see something of Jane's in person.
