Yes, I agree, Katheine.I love the blue/yellow theme( in Fact my kitchen has the same colour scheme!)

The late Duke, Andrew Cavendish, was Kathleen Kennedy's bother-in-law: she was married to his brother, the eldest son and Marquess of Hartington. As a second son Andrew Cavendish didn't expect to inherit, and, when his brother was killed in World war too, the Kennedy connection was broken, but he and his wife were invited to the Inauguration of President Kennedy, hence the gift.

So much detail in the designs. I like the color scheme of the footman's livery and what an interesting fact that Kennedy received one of the buttons.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and photos, Julie! :)

Those rocks are too vertiginous for me! I go there a few times every year, it is only 2 hours away, so (hopefully and eventually) I will see it all ;) Too much to see, too little free time....

Yes there is! We were only there for a few days but managed to fit a lot in including the Ramshaw Rocks - I've always wanted to stand where Lizzy did! I hope you get to spend some more time there so you can see everything you want to.

It was not a dumb question at all! I'm sure a lot of readers will be grateful to you for asking it, in the same way that they will be cross with me for neglecting to include it in the post in the first instance!

Oh, yes! What a wonderful explanation, thank you. Makes perfect sense. I rode in a carriage, once, in Egypt, and rode a burro in Disneyland, as child, but that's the extent of my horse (!)-and-carriage experience :-) so I couldn't even imagine how that name could apply. (Also can't imagine being late for the coronation! Sorry for the dumb question!)

I really enjoyed this post. Thank you, Julie.

The Chariot was transported to London, and the Devonshires travelled from their London home to Westminster Abbey in it: not without mishap....the coachman got lost en route...must have been hair-raising! Imagine being late....Horror!

As to Hammercloths...it is a very old word, the OED has its first documented use in 1465. The coachman traditionally carried hammers, ropes, nails etc - a repair kit if you like- under his seat, and according to the OED the Hammercloth hid all that from sight. Does that help?

Thank you! There is SO much to see in that part of Derbyshire, isn't there?I really want to spend a couple of weeks,as Chatsworth cannot all be done in one day- you really do need at least two if not three days to do it all(and eat some fine meals there, in the bargain!)

The display was very beautifully done. And to all this ...they now allow you to use flash on your camera!

Thanks for commenting!

Another great post, thank you! I went to Derbyshire a couple of weeks ago but didn't have time to visit Chatsworth (I know, shameful!) but now I feel like I have :) It must have been quite a sight to see the carriage and footmen in their heyday.
