This was of course the house to which Jane Austen and her parents first moved when they quitted the rectory at Steventon to move to Bath in 1801. The Austens rented the house which was opposite the Sydney Gardens, then right at the very edge of the town.
A one bedroom apartment in the building, on the second floor, has just come onto the rental market.
This is the view looking towards the Sydney gardens from the house. Go here to see all the details of the apartment.
I have to say that it is very tempting…and if the rental agreement found its way into my Christmas stocking..I’d be a very happy woman indeed!

This looks like a beautiful apartment! I too would love to live there and enjoy the Jane Austen vibes. Do you know, is 995 pounds/month a lot of money for a smallish one-bedroom in Bath, or does that seem about right? Or are you paying extra for the Austen connection? And what does pcm mean?

I don’t think the price reflects the Austen connection, no. That’s pretty much the going rate here in Bath. ‘pcm is ‘per calendar month’.

I agree, I don’t think there has been much of a premium added to reflect the Austen connection.

I’m very grateful that you brought it to my attention….if only I could have it as a pied a terre…….Thank you so much, at least a girl can dream x

Very sorely tempted myself! Though it would mean a drastic downsize. It’s hard to tell from the lovely pictures but it also sits on a disappointingly busy road, though just beyond said road is the park (Sydney Gardens).

DONE! I’ve had a talk with Santa, and he said he’d put it in your Christmas stocking for me…as a way to make up for my NOT getting you the Elizabeth Taylor theater-token necklace! :-) I would if I could, you know, as a means of thanking you for all you do…

Oh, if only I was ready to move to England! Sadly that’s still a few years off for me, so I’ll have to pass on this lovely apartment.

It’s a pretty apartment, isn’t it? Well, we can at least look at the pictures and dream;)

What a pretty light filled space, and so nice to be overlooking the gardens. As you said, a girl can dream! I wonder if the view has changed much since JA’s time – doesn’t seem like it.

Not much, but the modern traffic is pretty horrendous. Ive stayed not far from there and always dread crossing the road to get to the Holbourn Musuem, which is in Sydney Gardens. And well worth a visit.
