I do agree: their life stories are marvellous illustrations of how the arts and sciences were not as terribly separated then as they are today.
The Herschel Museum in New King Street is well worth a visit - it really feels like a home and you can see some of the astronomical instruments that William and his sister Caroline used.

LOL
I think she used her regular early morning music practising time at Chawton (when she was excused household duties) as a time for thinking:I think she played ,as one can if you know the piece well enough-semi automatically :her finers were miving correctly over the pianoforte keys, but her mind was on plots and devices.

Her avoidance of the music is almost comical: I wonder if it was an Austen family in-joke-beacsue Elizabeth ,Edward's wife seems to have been in on the plan and she was undoubtedly musical, for Jane Austen copied some of elizabeth 's sheet music not her own manuscript music books.

How very interesting that Jane Austen avoided the musical part of the King's party. I've read that she diligently practiced her own music daily, so I'd think she'd love it! I'd think that such a place, and such an occasion would bring out the best musicians, but you've shown us that was not so... And the other comments in her letter to CEA -- how puzzling! As you said, I guess we'll never know, but as a singer myself, it's quite piqued my curiosity. Very interesting...

YAY fireworks next; thanks, Julie,
CEA
I just get the biggest kick out of using my -- and Cassandra's -- initials here. You know what they say: Simple mind, simple pleasures! ;-)
