Thank you for this lovely post. I read the scene this morning before work and I did laugh out loud when I got to the end -- "tired to death — could bear it no longer — must go and sit in the shade.” I read Emma for the first time years ago and didn't like her or the story very much. Now, I think it is my favorite Austen, and my heroine and hero (I love Mr Knightly and would never think of calling him Knightly!) I fear I am a lot like Emma (which is probably why I didn't like her), and I like watching her learn and improve. Austen astonishes me sometimes -- she is such an excellent, smart writer -- so modern sometimes.

LOL about the health hazard. My Dad's books are like that, and my own are approaching it. What can I say? We love books! There are worse obsessions... (still chuckling!)

Fascinating, as always, Julie. The bit about Thomas Mawe posing as the author -- for snob appeal -- was a hoot! Your attention to detail never cease to amaze me , and, once again, I'd like to see your library!

Thank you,
