Julie, this is great! Knightely's a paragon, that's for sure. While I see more of myself in his brother John, I'll take the judicial connection with George any day. Thanks for all these insights.

Thats the way I see it too:-) He would have a beautiful Gothic chapel at Donwell but would also attend his ancient parish church at Donwell village ,where the living was in his gift and he would NEVER appoint someone as vile as Mr Elton to the post. They would have as their rector, someone who was a combination of the charming Henry Tilney and the serious Edmund Bertram ;-) This is turning into a piece of fanfic...;-)

Private chapel? Did someone say private chapel? I'm a member of team Knightly and on planet Caitlin, Donwell has a lovely private chapel, but to show support for his vicar and touch base with the locals he attended his parish church( I know, get a life). I always wondered who gave that toad the living.

Then you are due for a re-read! LOL Nice to see you here, Julie!
I think the appointment of Mr Elton to the vicarage (vicarage not rectory, note)of Highbury is very deliberately taken out of the hands of any of the good people in the area, and I agree ,Jane Austen would never have her hero appoint someone of Elton's stamp to such a vital role in the community. In terms of awfulness, he rates second only to Willoughby in my opinion. And its a close second.

That is a fascinating take on Mr. Elton. It has been, admittedly, at least 15 years since I last read Emma, and I never noticed that Donwell is not part of the same parish as Highbury. It makes complete sense to me that George Knightley would never have given a living under his control to Mr. Elton. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I really must re-read all of the Big 6 this year, instead of just Persuasion. It's been way too long.
