I did some digging with the help of Lynn Miller of the Wedgwood Musuem Sadly nothing else is known about the china mentioned in the 1811 letter:no record of the pattern etc survives. But as regards the ware still in the Jane Austen House Museum ordered by Edward Knight, a little more is known:

"Two years later the Austen family ordered another service with a border design in a small lozenge in purple, between lines of narrow gold, which was complete with the Knight family crest. The order was placed in September 1813, with additional pieces being requested as late as 1827"

Does that help at all, Laurel?

Thanks Julie - excellent info, but do we know which pattern that Jane Austen purchased? Has anyone ever researched it with Wedgewood? One would imagine that they kept copious records.

I am quite a lover of fine china, and would love to see a sumputuous picture book of early 19th-century china that the famous of the era owned and where it is today! Oh, one can dream can't one?

Fascinating, as always. Having thrown a few pots in my time -- a VERY few, actually, but it was a required part of my major in college -- I am interested in ceramics, and I particularly like Wedgewood. Thank you for this wonderful background information!

Julie - thanks as always. So wonderful to have every detail illuminated like that. And don't you just love the bit about there being no bill but that not screening them from being paid. She must have been so much fun, mustn't she?
